Warstrider AI

Onboard Intelligence

Onboard Intelligence can come in a variety of forms; but even combined they are an unusual and extremely rare subsytem in Warstriders. An OI can come in the form of a greater spirit or demon bound and shackled to the warstrider, or the lesser god of the warstrider itself awakened and empowered into the warstrider, or finally as a purely artificial construct designed to oversee and assist the warstrider and it’s pilot. In any incarnation, the OI’s primary function is to obey the exalt attuned to it and the warstrider. Their benefits range from full automation of the warstrider, to secondary knowledge or perception, and many others.

To incorporate an OI into a warstrider, you must purchase an appropriate level of the Warstrider OI background, it requires no Structure Points as the miniscule crystal array can fit just about anywhere in the warstrider frame. Each level of the background affords different advantages, as described for the canon Warstrider AI background on pg 145-146 in Wonders of the Lost Age, with the following changes:

The four-dot variety of the background has an additional 2 charms plus the normal Measure the Wind. Any references to Essence devices built into the warstrider now apply to subsystems. Additional charms that can be purchased by the four and five dot versions are found below OI Charms, including those found in Wonders no longer have virtue minimum requirements, only Essence.

Infinite Eyes of Autocathon
Cost: 6m (Spent by pilot or OI)
Mins: Essence 2
Type: Simple
Keywords: Combo-Ok
Duration: One Scene
Prerequisites: none

While warstriders without an OI can have a pale imitation using the HUD and targeting system, nothing can compare to the intelligent system of an Onboard Intelligence. A properly advanced warstrider can normally share its vision as if seeing from it’s helmet, this charm lets the warstrider augment that vision by highlighting important targets and objects such as enemies, and pointing them out to the pilot. Mechanically this adds dice equal to the warstrider’s essence to all attacks, and half that value to DV. Also, the pilot cannot be caught unaware of any attacks against him in the warstrider while this is active. Finally, coordinated attacks and onslaught penalties are reduced against a warstrider with this charm active. The benefits from a coordinated attack are counted as if there were less attackers involved equal to the warstriders Essence (so a coordinated attack involving 4 extra attackers against a warstrider with 2 essence and this charm would only count as having 2 extra attackers instead of 4). Onslaught penalties function in much the same way, acting as if the first attacks equal to the warstrider’s essence had not even occurred (so a flurry of 4 attacks would not start incurring onslaught on a warstrider of essence 2 until the 4th attack instead of the 2nd, starting at -1).

Tireless Autolocomotion
Cost: 6m (Spent by pilot or OI)
Mins: Essence 2
Type: Simple
Duration: Indefinite
Prerequisites: none

The pinnacle of warstrider intelligence, this charm allows the warstrider OI to completely take over control of it’s frame, with or without a pilot inside. With no pilot inside, the warstrider operates with an effective dexterity of its Essence, and follows basic commands of the pilot such as “walk”, “Attack”, or “Wait”; but cannot operate on it’s own directive. Without orders from the pilot, it simply powers down and await’s the return of the pilot.

At Essence 3, the warstrider gains the ability to operate of it’s own directive, always with the pilot’s motivation and intimacies in mind, and it’s own intimacy of the pilot’s safety. It will take actions according to these values, it’s Attributes, and it’s virtue’s when not under orders from the pilot. When an Essence 3 Warstrider first obtains this charm (or if a Warstrider that already has this charm somehow increases it’s essence to 3), it gains 15 points to spread among Abilities, these values do not change once they have been chosen. When operating on it’s own it uses these values in lieu of the pilot’s.

If the pilot is present in the warstrider while under the effects of this charm, he gains bonuses as if he had a second set of arms and legs. The pilot adds the warstrider’s Essence to rate and DV. Out of combat, the pilot can “kick back” and let the warstrider travel without suffering any affects of fatigue as he does not have to be “at the wheel”. If the warstrider engages in combat while the pilot is not strapped in, then it is considered to not have a pilot until he does so.

Once the motes are spent to activate this charm it can remain committed until no longer necessary.
